The 1909 Penn Theta chapter house, lovingly known as the "Old Grey Barn," is an historic landmark on the Lafayette College campus. Yet the passing years have taken their toll. The building, while structurally sound, is in need of upgrade and repair. To meet the expectations of contemporary students and their parents, as well as to remain a competitive student housing option at Lafayette College, a significant renovation of the chapter house is necessary.
Renovation Objectives:
- Install fire sprinkler system and upgrade fire alarm system.
- Stabilize central staircase
- Upgrade plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems
- Replace windows and HVAC
- State-of-the-art educational space, including a library and computer lab
- Renovate kitchen and food service equipment for an enhanced meal program
- Revitalize sleeping rooms to be comfortably competitive with dormitories and off-campus housing
- Provide comfortable social areas allowing members to grow beyond academic pursuits
- Replace front porches to restore the charm of the original design of the chapter house.
- Create areas within the house dedicated to individual and group academic activities
While we complete the restoration of the Old Grey Barn we are keeping our eye on other objectives vital to realizing longevity on the Lafayette campus. We intend to become the premier living group on campus, where the living experience promotes leadership, service and academic excellence and which actively involves members of the campus and alumni community. While the Old Grey Barn is our number one priority, Penn Theta's long range plan also includes the following objectives:
Renovation Objectives:
- Commend loyalty to the college, chapter and fraternity
- Facilitate service to the community via an annual schedule of events
- Involve college faculty, alumni and administrators by means of an annual speakers series
- Build support for the fraternity amongst parents and the college community
- Increase attention to and support of academic achievement
- Offer and support opportunities for leadership within the chapter and on campus
- Engage alumni through a program of mentoring, networking and professional development
- Promote the shared values of our Ritual and challenge our members to strive for its ideals
- Challenge our members to reach their full potential
